Protect Yourself With Proper Drug Disposal

One of the first lessons we are taught as children is to put everything back where it belongs, and that sentiment holds true as we grow older.  We learn that instead of throwing bottles and cans away in the trash, it’s best to do our part and recycle.  Even disposing of batteries and broken electronics requires more effort than simply tossing into a trashcan.  That’s why it should come as no surprise that unused prescriptions also have specific methods for disposal.

Here are 5 Tips For Proper Drug Disposal to make sure you know exactly what to do with any leftover medication:

  1. Read Carefully

Before taking time to decide the best way to dispose of an old prescription, be sure to read the instructions on the bottle.  The directions for proper disposal of that specific drug may already be written and waiting for you.

  1. Do Your Research

The FDA developed a consumer guide to proper drug disposal in 2007 that includes information on ‘Take Back’ community programs and exactly why so many precautions need to be taken when working with expired prescriptions.  Click here to download the PDF and learn more.

  1. In Case of Emergency….

If you are in a rush or surprise situation and are out of time for proper disposal, there is still one important precaution you should take.  Remove your prescription from the bottle and mix it with something unappealing like coffee grinds to deter any pets or people who might rifle through your trash. This is a last ditch effort since throwing away your prescriptions or flushing them down the toilet can be harmful to the environment. Be sure to weigh your options and when in doubt stop by the pharmacy.

  1.  Protect Yourself

You’ve taken care of the medicine, but what about the container?  Take a second to scratch out your personal information to make it unreadable. This will keep your prescription information private.

  1.  Talk To A Pharmacist

If you have any questions or doubts about how to properly dispose of any of your prescriptions, it is best that you ask your local pharmacy for assistance.  They can help explain the best procedure and guide you in the right direction.  If you are in the Coarsegold/Oakhurst area, call Coarsegold Pharmacy Wellness & Compounding at 559-692-3574 or stop by to receive more information.
